H1N1 Information from the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services
10-21-09: Antivral Medications
September 4, 2009
The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services reminds health care providers of the extreme importance in the appropriate use of anti-virals for treatment and post-exposure prophylaxis of H1N1 infection. As you know, inappropriate use can lead to anti-viral resistance, which would severely hamper the fight to lessen H1N1 spread. There have already been a few cases of Tamiflu-resistant H1N1 infection reported. In addition, there are several reports of anti-viral misuse and some stockpiling reports.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has now advised that even those only mildly or moderately ill with the H1N1 virus do not need to be given Tamiflu or Relenza unless they are in a high-risk group.
The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services has recently issued a Health Advisory concerning the appropriate use of anti-viral medications for novel (H1N1) influenza (please see PDF).
Also, please be reminded that publicly-funded anti-virals (i.e., made available through the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services and/or the Strategic National Stockpile) are to be used for treatment only, not prophylaxis.
WHO’s anti-viral recommendations can be viewed at http://www.who.int/csr/resources/publications/swineflu/h1n1_use_antivirals_20090820/en/index.html.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Eddie Hedrick at (573) 882-9881.
